I dissect my experience as a Chinese-American child through my next piece called Growth. A self-portrait depicting my body stuck in a field of napa cabbages (native to China), I sought to represent the connection between the Chinese food I eat and my identity. It showcases personal growth as I’ve come to accept and embrace the food I eat despite the ridicule from American peers on its smell and appearance. However, a more solemn meaning resides in my displeased expression: I feel stuck underneath the pressure of my culture and the consequences it brings when living in American society.
